In 1985 when I was forty-nine, I decided I wanted to write a book. I wrote some of it but my job and life took over so I put it aside. Finally in 2003 I retired moved to Alabama. I did some writing and then in 2006 I moved to Arizona where I now live. In 2008 I joined the Tucson Saguaro Chapter of RWA. It is a great Chapter and I enjoyed meeting other authors like myself who were only beginning.
In 2010 I started doing the Chapter’s monthly program called Book-In-A-Week. That year I wrote over 1,000 pages. It was fun and in that time I started several novellas. I also worked on the book I started in 1985. In October of 2010 I entered a contest sponsored by Keith Publications and won. The prize was a contract to publish my entry.
I write under the pseudonym of Jackie James and Masquerade was released on Kindle in November of 2011, my very first published book. I was 75. In 2012 two more of my books, Love Sport and Vengeance were published. In 2013 Ghost of Walker’s Run and an Anthology called Persephone’s Song a compilation of stories by six different authors was published. My contribution is called Defeating Evil. These books are all available on Kindle.
I turned 78 this year and have sold five more books to Keith Publications: Arizona Rangers, Sapphire - Book 1 of the Dragon World Series of six books, Moonlight Hunters, Moonlight Magic, and Moonlight Revenge, Books 1, 2 and 3 of Creatures of the Night Series. Moonlight Revenge is actually the first book I started in 1985 and I’m in the process of rewriting it to fit into the Series. I have promised myself I will never rewrite another book. It is easier to write from scratch.
In addition to all of this, since July of 2012 I have sold 15 short stories to True Renditions, publishers of True Story and True Confessions Magazines.
The moral of this story is, as the title says, you’re never too old to get published. I know authors older than I am that have been successful. Several are New York Times Bestselling Authors. True, they have been writing longer than I have, but that doesn’t matter. There is no age limit on our creativity. I have 9 projects I am working on in addition to the last 3 books of the Dragon World Series. I have the rights back to Masquerade and am going to make the 10,000 word novella into a full length book.
Don’t ever give up, don’t ever get discouraged. You have until the day you leave this earth to get published.
Arizona Rangers is due out later this year. It is a time-travel story about an original Arizona Ranger who travels from 1903 to present time and meets a beautiful modern day Arizona Ranger. He learns about modern technology and love. It will be available on Kindle.
Short Bio: Jackie James lives in Arizona with her cat Sammy. Besides writing, Jackie hikes in the beautiful mountains that surround the valley where Tucson is located. She has published five books since 2011 and has five more under contract. Her main focus is on Romantic Suspense and Paranormal Romance.
